Trifle is always a popular holiday dessert- it feeds a crowd and is made well ahead of time, with no last minute preparation. Frozen berries are an economical alternative to the usual fresh berries- and they are always ripe.

Ingredients

2 cups (500 mL) 35% whipping cream
2 tbsp (25 mL) icing sugar
1 can (400 g) PC Devon Custard
1 pkg (600 g) PC Strawberries Sliced , thawed and drained
1/2 cup (125 mL) PC Organics Fruit Spread - Strawberry
1 cup (250 mL) PC Dulce de Leche Caramel Creme Spread
1 (390 g) Farmer's Market Golden Loaf, cut in 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes
1/4 cup (50 mL) brandy (optional)
1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped PC Praline Pecans

Instructions

  1. In bowl and using electric mixer, beat whipping cream with sugar until soft peaks form. In another bowl, stir together half of the whipped cream and custard. In third bowl, stir together drained berries and jam. Set all three bowls aside.
  2. Place dulce de leche in glass measuring cup. Microwave on HIGH for 30 to 40 seconds or until sauce is pourable. Stir until smooth.
  3. Place half of cake in bottom of large 14-cup (3.5 L) glass bowl. If using brandy, sprinkle half of brandy evenly over cake cubes. Layer half the berry mixture over cake. Spread half the custard mixture over berries. Drizzle with half of the heated dulce de leche. Repeat layers of cake, brandy, berries, custard and dulce de leche. Spoon remaining plain whipped cream over top of trifle.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap. Chill for 4 to 8 hours. Sprinkle with praline pecans just before serving.

Chef's Tips

Raspberry Dulce de Leche Trifle Variation: Substitute a pkg of PC Frozen Raspberries and use PC Organics Raspberry Spread.
